Revisiting double blind review
My criticism of double-blind continued to invite a few more responses.
Particularly noteworthy, James pointed out that the journal ACM Transactions on Database Systems (TODS) as part of instituting double-blind reviewing, wrote up an editorial of the pros and cons. I have unfortunately been busy enough with my dissertation I have not had a chance to look through it.
Stefan pointed out that as scientists we ought to believe in the principle of double-blind experimental process. I can't argue with that. However, I imagine one could debate whether selecting papers for conference or workshop should be considered a scientific process.
Less seriously, one might consider the triple blind reviewing as described in Professor Short and Doctor Tall's »The Blind Leading the Blind« (note that this links to a PowerPoint presentation). An excellent photo from the talk

Thanks for this hilarious presentation of “the blind leading the blind”. Unfortunately, it’s not just the pros and cons of double blind review that can be questioned but the actual application of the process (from either side, let it be editors, reviewers, or the authors themselves). Isn’t it funny how all scientific disciplines struggle with the same issues regarding review processes?
